Rockport, Maine ~ Limekilns

The remains of the limekilns.
All those old plaster walls
All those old bricks with mortar to hold them together
Rockport was once very industrious in lime making.
The railway ran above the kilns and the limestone was dumped into the kilns.
A mighty fire which needed huge amounts of wood would burn the limestone
until the powdery lime was left.

A Vulcan steam locomotive.
These powerful little locomotives helped bring the limestone to Rockport, Maine.
